Background: The intersection of mental health and the criminal justice system raises significant concerns among administrators, policymakers, and treatment providers, particularly regarding the involvement of mentally ill individuals in criminal activities. In Nigeria, mental health services within correctional facilities remain rudimentary, underscoring the need for improved mental health provisions for incarcerated populations. This study aims to evaluate the psychiatric morbidities among inmates in a correctional facility in Jos, Nigeria, and assess the nature of mental health services provided.

Methods: A comprehensive assessment was conducted to identify the prevalence and types of psychiatric disorders among inmates. Additionally, the study examined the existing mental health services and treatment modalities available within the facility.

Results: Preliminary findings indicate a notable prevalence of psychiatric disorders among the inmate population, with specific emphasis on the types of morbidities identified. The study further outlines the limitations of current mental health services and highlights areas for improvement.

Conclusion: This evaluation underscores the urgent need for enhanced mental health care in Nigerian correctional facilities to address the psychiatric needs of inmates effectively. Implementing structured mental health services could significantly improve the overall well-being of this vulnerable population.
