Abstract
Abstract
Background: Psychiatrists usually refer patients for electroencephalography (EEG) when they suspect that a mental illness has an organic cause. Nonconvulsive seizures may mimic functional psychiatric illnesses by manifesting with abnormal behaviors. These seizures may be misdiagnosed by clinicians without EEG. This has major implications for psychiatric practice in a developing country like Nigeria, where seizures and other potentially preventable organic brain syndromes are common. Despite its limitations, EEG has been useful in evaluating psychiatric patients with suspected seizures. This study determined the predictive value of EEG in epilepsy patients with abnormal behaviors.
