Fertility regulation: comparison of severely mentally ill and non-mentally ill Nigerian women.

Abstract
Background: Patients with severe mental illness have peculiar reproductive behaviors, needs and problems, they are also known to require special family planning intervention approaches to achieve optimal rehabilitation. We needed local preliminary evidence of these needs and problems in order to plan and develop better intervention strategies for these women.
Methods: This was a cross sectional study comparing 100 female outpatients with severe mental disorders and 200 non-mentally ill women attending primary care outpatient clinics and in the reproductive age group. A semi structured questionnaire about their socio -demography , family characteristics, fertility, family planning or contraceptive characteristics was used.
