Psychiatric Diagnostic Outcome and its Correlates Among Individuals with Medically Unexplained Symptoms in a Nigerian General Medical Practice Setting

Abstract:

Background: A significant proportion of attendees in primary healthcare settings present with somatic symptoms, many of which may be classified as medically unexplained symptoms (MUS). These symptoms often have psychosocial underpinnings, creating diagnostic challenges for primary care physicians. This study aimed to describe the psychiatric diagnostic outcomes and their correlates among individuals with MUS in a Nigerian general healthcare setting.

Methods: Over a twelve-month period, all consenting cases of MUS seen by general physicians at a general medical practice were referred to a psychiatrist. The study involved 150 individuals out of 1,450 consecutive patients. Sociodemographic information was obtained using a structured questionnaire, and clinical interviews were conducted using the Schedule for Clinical Assessments in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN). Participants' physical health status was also assessed. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 16, with logistic regression analyses performed to identify correlates of psychiatric morbidity.
